The OPR Story

Where Broken Hearts are Mended

For more than 20 years, OPR Coastal Primate Sanctuary has called Southwest Washington home, providing a safe, permanent sanctuary for primates in need.

Formerly known as Oregon Primate Rescue, OPR has grown and evolved over the years, while remaining committed to the same mission that has guided the organization from the beginning.

Our Mission
The mission of OPR is to provide lifetime care in a humane and enriching environment to unwanted, orphaned or discarded monkeys that originate from private owners, from government agencies, and to those retiring from a life of research.

Education & Awareness

OPR raises awareness of the complexities involved in keeping primates as pets and works to educate the public about adult or aberrant behaviors that can result from various aspects of captive life, in hopes of reducing the number of unwanted primates in the private sector.

OPR also stresses the importance of preserving wildlife habitat and increasing awareness of how human encroachment affects primate species in the wild.

Supporting Humane Primate Care

OPR offers health, diet, enrichment and management information to those who care for captive primates, with the goal of promoting humane conditions for primates maintained in all captive environments.

This educational component is an important extension of the sanctuary’s work and helps encourage responsible, informed care beyond OPR itself.

Education Through Partnership

Partnerships with Oregon State University, Central Washington University, Ohio Wesleyan University, and Oxford University have provided student interns who help OPR improve and continue its mission.

These educational relationships provide students with valuable learning opportunities while also supporting the sanctuary’s ongoing work in primate care, enrichment, education and conservation.

More Than 20 Years in Southwest Washington

For more than two decades, OPR has been part of the Southwest Washington community, providing lifetime care and sanctuary for primates who need a permanent place to call home.

Every primate who comes to OPR has a unique history and individual needs. The sanctuary’s commitment is to provide a humane, enriching and stable environment for the remainder of each animal’s life.

It is why OPR continues to be a place where broken hearts are mended.
